The Servanthood Trail

October 17, 2017 @ 6:30 pm

Have you ever heard the expression, “It’s like trying to pull teeth?”  That is an expression someone shares when they are trying to get someone to volunteer for something, help with a project or get a teenager to wake up for school.  Recruiting volunteers has been the challenge for many non-profit organizations as well as many other organizations and companies because people are either too busy or just too lazy or perhaps both.

Finding volunteers can be a full-time job filled with a lot of anxiety and this has been the challenge of the church over the last few decades.  Fewer and fewer people are serving and are content with just sitting in the pews no matter how much you beg and plead.  For some maybe they’ve never discovered the talents God has given them to be used for building His kingdom and maybe for others they have never been asked to serve.  For whatever reason, the church suffers because there are just a handful of people who end up doing all the work.

But what if all that changed?  What if more than a handful of people began to pitch in and serve?  Well, we are experiencing that every Sunday morning at HHUMC.  We literally could not have church if it wasn’t for people serving to make church happen.  We are so thankful for and are truly blessed by all our volunteers in the church. How do we make certain that we involve new people and give them an opportunity to serve?

What’s God asking you to do?  Into what project has Jesus invited you to partner with Him?  I can guarantee you it has something to do with the Great Commission which involves living into our mission of, “Following Jesus Christ, Making Disciples, Transforming Our Community and the World.”  The difference in recruiting is changing your mind-set from recruiting for a task and switching to the idea of inviting people to be a part of a team.
